Maintaining your work place as a safe premise for you and your employees is one of your main duties as the owner. Most of the time, you protect your business establishment from usual incidents such as burglary. However, you should also put much attention to other kinds of incidents like fire. In the year 2008, a total of 77,000 fire incidents happened in building establishments. Such an alarming amount only poses a great deal of challenge for business owners in making their business places a safer place for their occupants. More importantly, it poses the challenge of installing much more efficient and effective means of both preventing and fighting fire in case it breaks out.

Installing fire extinguishers in your work places will definitely be a great advantage for you when such unpleasant incidents happen. These fire extinguishers not only give you the chance to eliminate the fire before spreading out into a larger scale, but they also give you and your employees more time to evacuate the vicinity. Much effort must be given by the business owner in picking out which type of fire extinguisher is most suitable for his or her work place. Having the appropriate fire extinguisher will be at your advantage in putting out certain fires in your work place.

There are different types of fire extinguishers which you can purchase in the market. There are the water extinguishers, CO2 extinguishers, foam fire extinguishers, dry powder fire extinguishers, and even stainless steel fire extinguishers. All of these types have different dynamics and purposes, and finding out which ones you most likely need in your work place definitely helps you in choosing one. More often than not, CO2 fire extinguishers are suitable for work places. This type of fire extinguisher is specifically designed to combat fire that is brought about by electronic devices and the like, which, as we all know can be found in offices and business establishments.

Furthermore, CO2 fire extinguishers have the ability to displace oxygen in the air so that fire will have no means of spreading to a much larger scale. Also, this type of fire extinguisher can do little damage on delicate properties and materials that may be present within your work place. Much recently, Chubb, a leading manufacturer of fire extinguishers and other fire preventive devices, has created a CO2 fire extinguisher that can be used in high magnetic field places such as hospital MRI rooms. More and more innovations are being created to further enhance the capabilities of the traditional fire extinguisher, making it a much more efficient tool in fighting fire.

Putting a fire extinguisher in your work place must also be strategic and well planned. It is advisable that your fire extinguishers be put near emergency exits or at any place where they are easily accessible. Purchasing CO2 fire extinguishers for your work place is a good and rational investment for you as an owner. It will help you give your employees a sense of safety inside your work place, even when an undesirable incident occurs.

One of the most important place for any human being is his workstation. After all, it is the place where one works and earns his living. It is, therefore, necessary that it is as comfortable as it can possibly get, for it is only then that one would be able to give his best. Talking about a comfortable work place, one thing that goes a long way in making the work place extremely comfortable is the presence of comfortable office chairs. The reason for this is not difficult to understand.

Office chairs are the objects, on which people sit and do their work; the more comfortable the office chairs, better it is for people sitting on it. There are quite a few things that go into making the office chairs comfortable. To start off with, they should have a flexible back support, which would ensure that one does not develop backache sitting on it for nine to ten hours everyday. Then, office chairs should have arms where the tired arms can be rested upon. Office chairs should also have wheels beneath them so that they can easily be taken from one place to another rather than being lifted from one place to another.

Apart from office chairs, other thing that goes a long way in making the work place comfortable are the office desks. For starters, they should be made of glass so that one can see what is lying inside without requiring to open the drawers. The drawers should also be of two types – a deeper one for keeping files, and a shallow type to keep the pens, pencils, erasers, etc. The office desks should be L shaped so that it has enough place to keep the things conveniently.

Thus, it becomes apparent that office chairs and office desks has to be comfortable to give a relaxed look to the office, and allow people to give in their hundred per cent.

In today’s competitive world, it is more important than ever for businesses to attract and keep highly talented people. In order to do that, they must provide a work place environment that is challenging, creative, and fun. Since creativity is at the root of innovation and invention, it would behoove all companies – large, small, or in between – to help promote a creative atmosphere in which this talent may flourish. What better way to get a huge return on their investment?

A two-year in-house creativity course offered at General Electric resulted in a sixty percent increase in concepts available for patents, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In 1999, after investing over two million dollars in research and development, Hewlett Packard generated more than 1,300 applications for patents.

When the Sylvania Company offered several thousand employees a forty-hour creative problem-solving course, their return on investment came to $20 for every $1 they spent.

So how can your company keep its employees happily coming up with great, innovative ideas?
Look for these creative people. Recognize them for the intelligent innovators that they are.
Create an atmosphere that’s conducive to creativity. You need to let the ideas come forth and thrive. Be tolerant about ideas that don’t work out initially. There’s always a next time when more fresh ideas can be implemented.

Acknowledge the people in the company who generate new ideas. It’s important to foster that creativity and show visible support. Champion those innovators!

Reward the creators with public recognition, monetary rewards, or both.

The workers and the managers should bring about creative changes in the company together, shaping a fellowship that allows for a feeling of safety for those creative ideas. It should provide an environment where people can feel secure about expressing those ideas, without being fearful of criticism or ridicule.
The feelings of respect and trust for one another will foster inspiration, and dismiss any negativity or critical judgments. The perfect atmosphere would be one of encouragement, motivation, good training, and lots of opportunities to be creative. This would provide the necessary creativity to the organizational level.
No longer would you go to a work place that fills you with dread each day. The job that provides you with money for food, clothing, and shelter, not to mention a few luxuries, could also be a pleasant haven during the workday. You’d have security and status, but without so much stress. If your creativity is allowed to blossom, your heart and soul for your career returns as well. This could change the face of the work place. Implement this yourself and see if you can make a change for the better in your own workplace.
Many companies try to avoid putting creativity back into the work place. They feel it could lead to chaos. They say that it would be illogical, unruly, and uncontrollable. This needn’t be the case, if approached in the proper manner.

If you encourage creativity within your company and support the talented people, it will help you compete, regardless of your industry. According to Fortune Magazine (January 1998), highly motivated employees are up to 127% more productive than those averagely motivated employees in complex jobs. It’s simple – if an employee feels satisfied and encouraged in his job and happy with the company, he will become more motivated and thereby become more productive. A happy worker is a productive worker!

Unfortunately, our country has become a nation of workaholics. We feel if we’re not busy 24/7, we must be slacking off; we must produce nonstop or other people will think that we’re lazy. But busyness for its own sake is a sign of low self-worth and should be avoided. Even God rested after working for six days.
It’s okay to sit and do nothing once in a while. Sometimes, you have to let a problem sit awhile and incubate in your mind. The answer will come more easily if you stop obsessing about it. Even daydreaming is useful. If you allow your child to daydream, they will develop a higher IQ. Why not do the same for yourself? Remember too, that play is just as important for an adult as it is for a child.

Believe it or not, the number one concern of employees at any level of a company is not money, but the desire for a good balance between their work life and their personal life. In order for good employees to keep up with the level expected of them, they must attain a certain balance of work and play. Vacations, occasional personal time, and a pleasant work place are essential for their careers and their health.
There’s a Zen saying that the bow kept forever taut will break. This is very true. We need to play and relax in order to be productive. Play, even at our work place, makes us happy and joyful. It clears those cobwebs out of the brain and allows us to think more clearly, thus becoming more productive. The problems that seemed beyond your reach while brainstorming might come so much easier when your mind is free of stress and worry.
Creativity and play are essential these days. We’re all looking for more purpose in our lives, and we’re beginning to re-think our jobs and careers as well. Job security is a thing of the past; and unless employers begin to recognize and encourage creativity on the job, there could be radical changes coming.
In many companies, smart employers are beginning to see the advantage of closely-knit teams working together to form creative, problem-solving forces. They’ve begun using a more open kind of office, omitting walls between the departments. They’re making use of more computers and other forms of communication with each other. Department heads are working more closely with the lower levels, so they are aware of what’s happening at all times. The chain of command is made simpler, responsibilities are expanded, and creative and innovative ideas are welcomed and encouraged.

In any job or profession, there are problems to be solved; and where there is problem solving, there will be creative thought. The first step to solving a problem is to know everything you can possibly know about the problem. You must know how it started and what caused it. Get hold of all pertinent information.
Start to look at all the facts. Figure out how they fit together. Sometimes, you’ll find that unlikely elements can start to make some sense together. Try not to fall into what scientists jokingly refer to as “psycho sclerosis” or hardening of the attitudes. This just means not falling back into the “this is the way we’ve always done it” syndrome. If it has always been done that way, why is there a problem with it now? Obviously, it isn’t working now, so it’s time to figure out a new way to do things.

Watch out for the notorious “inner critic.” (More about that in another chapter.) This is simply that little voice in your head that tells you it’s impossible for you to solve this problem. It’s the old “if others haven’t been able to solve this muddle, what makes you think you can?” critic. Disregard this voice. Unfortunately, you might also hear this selfsame voice coming from others as well. Remember the words of Mark Twain, who said, “The man with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.”

Watch out too for the frustration that can come at you. Long hours of preparation and anguish, when the answer doesn’t present itself, can often lead to total frustration with the whole project. You just want to throw up your hands and yell, “I quit!” But don’t! That’s just the “darkness before the dawn,” as they say. Stay persistent. The answer is out there and you’ll find it; just don’t give up. It’s not that a problem is unsolvable; sometimes, people just give up too quickly.

Sometimes, you just have to let that thought simmer in your brain for a while, let things gel a bit. Maybe you just need to “sleep on it.” Let your subconscious work on it for the night. (More on the subconscious in another chapter.)

Often times, going on about your usual business, getting ready for work, showering, and shaving will break the dam and the brilliant ideas just pop to the surface of your brain. A long walk or a drive in the country will make all the difference. You just need to relax and let those ideas simmer in your brain until they’re done. Maybe it’s time to play!

Try to take a break often during your day and let your mind rest a bit. Our world is encroaching on our thinking time, all during the day. Your boss, associates, teachers, students, even television, all want to tell you what you should be doing, every minute of the day. Sometimes, you just need a break from all the mind controlling going on and think your own thoughts.

Whether it’s on the job or at home with your family, the creativity you possess is a vital tool in your life. Have faith in your own creativity. Don’t be so hard on yourself if things don’t work the first time. Be an observant human, watch everything, learn, and don’t be afraid to ask the dumb questions. You know what they say – the only dumb question is the one you didn’t ask.

I can still remember when I am about to start my first day at the office, one of my major concern was gaining extra weight around my waistline because of the undisputed 8 hours of moving nothing beside my fingers kind of job. But today, we will bust out those old worries and learn how we can turn our typical office job into 8 hours of calorie burning routine.

In a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic under the supervision of Dr. James Levine, 18 Minneapolis office workers lose a total of 156 pounds in a program they called as NEAT in 2007. NEAT or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis occur naturally, according to Levine. Some of the activities that are under this NEAT program are walking, bending, stretching, standing up and fidgeting during resting metabolism. In addition to what he propose, a little bit of creativity in the work place, knowledge about food and by infusing small but often movement in workplace will simply start melting the weights off.

In 2007, Levine’s team of experts launched a six-month experiment with 18 office employees of small financing business in Minneapolis. They first, renovated and redecorated the office. The typical table and chairs were replaced oddly enough by desks that came pre-attached to treadmills. They also installed a walking track within the circumference of the office. The idea is to keep employees walking at work at a pace of 1.1 miles an hour. Levine also enrolled the participants in food education seminars. Educating them about the importance of food in their lives and changing the perspective of food from comforter to fuel.

Moreover, Levine stressed out that what they want office people learn in this study is not to focus on losing weight rather in living their life in a dynamic and positive ways. Not more than a year, the participants lost a total of 156 pounds, 9 pounds each person. Significantly, as the employee tend to become active and physically fit the revenue of the small financial firm increases up to 10 percent.

Successful companies often see a sudden rise in the number of people leaving them. Employees often leave a good company for a better one, and competition is high in the market place today. If your company is losing a lot of its trusted employees, you need to re think about the motivation factors in affect at the work place. Keeping your employees satisfied does not necessarily mean that you would have to spoil them or let them be lazy. Here are a few ideas to help keep the employees happy, while getting the work done at the same time:

1. Have a little fun at the work place!
You need to understand that maybe your employees are under a lot of pressure to perform at work, and maybe it is the high pressure that causes some of them to throw the towel in and leave. Adding a little bit of fun at the office may just encourage the workers to be a little more at peace with the environment in which they work. You could create breaks where everybody forgets work for a few minutes. At other times, you may see employees sharing a quick joke, and it is better not to discourage that. A happy employee will do a lot of work in a smaller period of time than an unhappy one being forced to sit at his desk and not move from there.

2. Treat your employees on a personal level.
Very often there are misunderstandings at the work place, and being the boss you could sort them out the best, provided you know every employee on an individual basis. Misunderstandings are often the result of poor communication, and knowing each worker on a personal level can help you see where a misunderstanding could have happened.

3. Give Incentives and Bonuses.
This goes a long way in making the work place more effective. Just make sure you do not have favorites who you just need a reason to reward – that is more destructive to the other employees than not giving bonuses at all.

4. Respect the expertise that an employee may have.
If someone is an expert at his own area, he really doesn’t like being told how to get the job done. So, try and not interfere with the methods employed. Instead, concern yourself only with the results that are achieved.

You may well want to add to this list of how you could make the work place an enjoyable place to be in for the employees as well as for you your self. Remember, there is no harm done with a little bit of a casual atmosphere, as long as work goes on smoothly.

There is hardly a work place anywhere that doesn’t use at least one, but more than likely, uses quite a few potentially hazardous chemicals. Some chemicals are harmless, but others are very toxic, even in small amounts. As an employee in industry using solvents, lubricants, reagents, and cleaners, you may be exposed to harmful levels of chemical vapors or come in with contact with dangerous dusts, granules, or even cryogenic (hyper cold) or radioactive materials in a new job you are starting.

Chemical process engineers and occupational safety and health professionals in your chemical processing or manufacturing facility should have identified the chemicals you must work with as well as the activities in which the potentially hazardous exposures could occur. If you have been working in a different facility on a similar process, the following guide will help you get acquainted with how to become familiar with different chemical process.

During your training on the new process, request computer access to Material Safety Data Sheets or obtain hard copies of MSDS’s of the chemical you could receive exposures to. These fact sheets identify the characteristics of individual chemicals that could create the most hazardous conditions, how to prevent or control exposures, how to respond to emergency situations, and how to safely handle, pour, transport, move, store and dispose of hazardous chemicals.

Check the MSDS to make sure you understand how potentially hazardous chemicals are controlled, including any Personal Protective Equipment you must be fitted for and trained to use correctly, and engineering controls you must work with.

Identify from the MSDS the composition of specific chemicals you must handle, pour, store, move and dispose of in doing your job. Learn the reactivity of the chemicals you must work with, and whether those chemicals react with others found in the work place. Ask your supervisor any question you may have concerning the use and methods of protection from harmful affects of all potentially hazardous chemicals you must work with. Check emergency numbers of the chemical manufacturers provided in the MSDS.

There are many professions and work places that require their personnel to wear uniforms. They include the Military personnel, Pilots, Park or forest rangers, Flight attendants, Fire fighters, Nurses security guards among many others.

First, what is the reason for wearing uniforms at work places? Why does some work place requires that their employees wear uniforms? Why put a lot of emphasize on uniforms yet it’s the people who do the working not the uniforms. Here are reasons for some professions to wear uniforms at the work place.

It’s argued that some profession such as the military and police needs to portray a strong sense of solidarity and comradeship. Therefore wearing uniforms helps develop and create solidarity, and hence builds a feeling of teamwork, togetherness and identity throughout the work force. A military camp, troop or battalion without uniform will definitely look like a market place with no proper organization and chaotic. Wearing uniforms among the military personnel and the police is important particularly when in the battle field; uniforms make each soldier identify a fellow soldier.

For Pilots and flight attendants wearing uniforms creates a major and greater public awareness and in return build the brand or the company image. For instance the type of uniform British Airways or Virgin Atlantic air hostess and stewards wears puts displays the quality of service offered by them. Imagine boarding a plane only to see air hostess and hosts moving up and down without uniforms serving the passengers. This may unsettle the passengers creating more and more anxiety in them. Wearing uniforms at working place also builds and improves the working environment spirit. No one feels that he or she is looked down upon by fellow employee.

Wearing uniforms among fire fighters and nurses is also essential, for it helps build a more work like environment among employees. It’s also essential and makes it easier for them to get recognized by their clients or those that they serve in their various professions.

Chefs or cooks also need to wear uniforms in order to get identified with the kind of job they are doing. Whether you are working as a chef in fast foods cafes or restaurants or in the McDonalds, you need to wear uniforms. Chefs don’t wear uniform to look funny but it’s a requirement. This requirement is medieval and has been carried from generation to generation.

Workers in the building and construction sites are also required to wear uniforms so that not only to identify them with their kind of tasks but also acts as a protective means from security hazards that may arise. Some studies confirm that those work places whose employees wear professional, standardized uniforms realize improved sales and increased customer satisfaction. Customers tend to develop a more positive perception of the company’s activities. Company uniforms help build company image or brand, this because they are worn by all the employees. Uniforms also makes them feel part and parcel of the company and hence more productive.

Turn around and look at your workplace you’ll find humpty number of papers lying down and printed materials ranging from business cards to brochures. Words and images that are printed on paper will appear to be like one of the most eco friendly thing but what you are observing will necessarily not be true in case.
If you look on the life cycle of printed materials it starts from turning trees into paper and then with the help of chemicals and other materials the activity of print takes place which is certainly not environmental friendly.
Though lots of inventions have taken place yet we are not able to get away with that printed materials. Web and digital technology are high in demand but still such technology has not helped to change things. One of the biggest goals of every organization is to cut down their paper work and make their office as a paperless office. But the fact is they have are not able to achieve any success in this issue. This is because there is a lack of awareness and they are not willing their style of print. Complete changes are certainly impossible but with few and readily available techniques we will surely achieve success in this issue.

Concept of green printing or eco friendly printing is gaining more importance in present scenario. If you want to print go for green printing. It is a wonderful concept and it is in a great roll. No matter if it is a small organization or a large one every organization can adopt such technique for their print activity. Demand for such technique is high and it is still growing as for the reason there are number of printers who are offering such services, while some are claiming to.

Mechanism and the job of print which is followed from many decades have not been changed yet. To carry on this task with traditional ideas engages variety of inks, acids, dyes, solvents, modifiers, and many other solutions. Among all these solution only a few end up in the printed materials. Remaining solutions are helpful in cleaning and in other process.

With the help of green printing techniques many of these solutions can be avoided. The result of the print will be greater than the traditional way of print. Petroleum based inks are very toxic and it causes many health related problems in humans and it is harmful for other living beings too. As workers are continuously involved in the activity of print their health will surely be affected with such toxic inks.

To avoid this to happen green printing has bought a substitute for your petroleum based inks. Vegetable or soy based inks are perfect substitutes for your toxic inks. The result of print will be similar and your workers will also feel happy as they are now able to get a healthy place for work. For the betterment of your organization it is wise to adopt the techniques of green printing and make others to follow the same.

Stress is pretty much found everywhere including in the work place. This kind of stress should be taken very seriously because it might affect your productivity. If you are the kind of person who likes to escape with your emotions, then stress in the work place might affect you more. This is because a place of work is where you share emotions with friends and colleagues. They are better placed to understand your concerns compared to your wife. Stress at work can be caused by several major factors which include the following work overload, poor communication with people at work, lack of unity, poor discipline, selfishness goals and many more.

The first one is work load which simply means that you are given work too much for you to handle. There are no forums to complain about this and you have to be constantly be vigilant and be firm to state you point. You can either go to the boss and tell them your case. Some workers think that doing this might automatically cost your job. To the contrary, this is shows that you value the lines of communication and that you are wiling to resolve things instead of just quitting without words. You therefore need to air your grievances in the most courteous manner possible in form of respect showing great sincerity. There are two possible outcomes of this conversation and it can either be positive or negative.

If your claims are genuine, any person of authority will listen and express their opinion. The worse thing you can do is to stay silent with your problem and at a work situation, this silence is enough time to give you stress which is unhealthy for you. Poor communication which is also lack of communication between you and your co workers will work for your detriment. In the working environment, you are not an island and you therefore need your co workers because they will end up keeping their distance if you do not accommodate them. The feeling that will follow is of segregation. This will lead to work place stress. This applies to workers who feel that they might be superior to others.

Lack of unity will destroy not only working environments but it will also affect all forms of relationships. There is sense of power when people are together in harmony. Unity will see people work together in unity for the better. Another thing that will affect you is the taking of too much office work at home which will end up affecting your family and increasing the stress on your part. There are various strategies you can engage in to make sure you avoid the negative effects of stress in the work place. Firstly, establish a good relationship with your work mates and the atmosphere will definitely change for the better. Make sure you plan your work well. You might not have an overload and you end up getting stressed due to poor organizational skills. Another thing is that you should not waste any time. This is because office workers have been found to also waste a lot of time doing things that are not beneficial to the company.
